Sunday Sounds: Leadbelly - Pick a Bale of Cotton (1945)

I've chosen a song suggested by the lovely Katie over at Zombie Lace (which you really should check out by the way as it's full of vintage goodness!) for this weeks Sunday Sound. Last week we had an old Northern Soul classic and this week Katie thought it would be a good idea to have some more old American blues. She suggested a couple of tracks by Leadbelly and I chose this one, as Katie pointed out it's a slave song and it's in colour.

I love the quality of the video it's really antique looking and the grainy picture is fantastic. I was really thrilled to have this suggested as it's definitely like nothing featured so far as a Sunday Sound and it was totally new to me. The history of American slavery is something I know very little about, only through films and articles, so seeing this animated gentleman really opened my eyes. He's a wonderful showman that's for sure. Thank you so much Katie for your suggestion.

Do you have a Sunday Sound that you'd like to hear? Perhaps a long lost classic you wish to share? Drop me a comment if so!

Happy Sunday everyone!

I'm so glad you liked it!! I don't think Lead Belly was ever a slave himself, but the song is a slave folk song and the video definitely captures some of that. And isn't the color amazing?

As a fellow history fanatic, if you ever want to know more about American history or slavery, I'd be glad to tell you what I retained from school :~)
